Do you think Aspen could be used for a girl or a boy name?

My husband and I are not finding out the sex of our third child. I am in love with the name for either boy or girl, however my husband thinks its too girly for a boy. What do you guys think.

Do you think Aspen could be used for a girl or a boy name?
I think Aspen is a wonderful unisex name. As long as it's paired with a more masculine middle name, such as Nicholas or James, it world be just fine.

Good luck!
Reply:I agree with your husband.

Victorians delighted in naming girls for the flora of the world: Violet, Daisy, Lilly. I would certainly add trees to that list.

One of the most common aspens is the Quaking Aspen. I think that reference could be socially fatal to any boy. I think if you choose to name a boy after a tree, you might want to name for a stronger, more robust tree. The following list was made by a Master Gardener in Kansas after an ice storm.

Bald cypress

Chinese pistache

Crabapple

Ginkgo

Goldenraintree

Honeylocust

Kentucky coffeetree

Linden

Maple, amur

Maple, autumn blaze

Maple, red

Maple, Shantung

Maple, sugar

Oak, bur

Oak, red

Oak, shingle

Oak, Shumard

Oak, swamp white

Osage orange

Pear, Aristocrat

Pear, Chanticleer

Pine, Austrian

Planetree, London

Redbud

Sweetgum

Zelkova (Japanese gray-bark elm)

See? Even strong species have names better suited to girls than boys.

I just can't see naming a boy Pear, Redbud, or Sweetgum.
Reply:Considering the fact that the aspen tree is in the willow family and there are really no significant figures of it being used on boys, I'd say it is more feminine than not.

However, more so than the unisex issue, I find the name itself to be bothersome. We've all heard of of the world-famous ski resort in Aspen, Colorado. I've always thought it makes the name seem a little pretentious and stuffy. One of those, "My child was conceived here" type of place names. Also, I can't get over the fact that it has '***' right at the beginning of it, plain and clear as day. All I hear is '*** pen'.
Reply:I think it is a beautiful name that could work for a male, but when first heard sounds like the name of a female. I was thinking the other day about the name Cypress. I think it could be for a girl spelled that way, or Cyprus for a boy. I just really like it but already have baby names chosen so I thought I would share! :)
Reply:It's okay, but, for some odd reason, I keep thinking of Asprin because the soundings are so similar. How about use it as for a middle name? Um, I agree with you. I think it can suit either boy or girl.

Hope this helps

Reply:Boy. It is masculine and not girly or feminine. Your husband is wrong. I would rather see it on a male, than on a girl.
Reply:Aspen i think it's too masculine for a girl,,

if you would use it for a girl try other girly spelling like

example:

Asphen..or Ashpen..
Reply:Im sorry I agree with your husband I think it sounds like a girls name! But you could always put it as a middle name if you have a boy?
Reply:I know it would work for either. My sister's name is Aspen, and then a close friend's husband is named Aspen. It seems very normal with both sexes.
Reply:When I saw the name "Aspen", I thought of a boy.

I think it's perfect for a boy!!
Reply:I think it sounds more feminine than anything. I agree with your husband.
Reply:Personally, I love it but, your husband may be right.
Reply:I love it for either!!!
Reply:boy
