Why do woman want to give their daughter a boy name?

Like Ryan, Dylan, and Jordan. They want their daughter to grow up to be a tomgirl?

Why do woman want to give their daughter a boy name?
Personally I don't understand it. Some names are gender neutral - like Jordan, Taylor, Casey.... but names like Dylan, Ryan, Hayden, Blake - I mean seriously!

To me it sounds like the parents had all their hopes on having a boy, and then the baby pops out, and they're gutted and are almost pretending to themselves that it is so they lump a boys name on her. How awful!

I haven't heard many instances so far on boys being given girls name.... but time will tell. Oh yeah I have actually heard of guys being called Stacey, Tracey etc.... poor men
Reply:I think that it's just a matter of choice. My younger daughter is name, Jordan and it was just the only name that my husband and I could agree on. Personally, I always thought of it as a girl's name, even though it is traditionally a boy's name. I know a girl, Ryan, at the school that I work at and she is extremely feminine (she has super long hair and is in cheer). So, it doesn't always mean that a girl will be a tomboy.

I do disagree with a few names that I have heard people try to make unisex. My friend has a neighbor named, Kevyn (a girl) and she has a hard time with her name. I have also heard the name, Wyatt, used for a girl and the mom was constantly agitated that people mistakened her for a boy all time. I wonder why!
Reply:I've never heard of people naming their little girl Ryan or Dylan! If they do that, they might be trying to honor a family member like a grandfather who's passed on. Jordanis common enough for a girl that I would consider it a unisex name (remember the movie Cocktail?). I bought a baby name book recently since we're expecting in Dec., and found out that several "girl" names, like Leslie and Ashley, were originally used only for boys. I think the lesson is to avoid unisex names for boys, since they might eventually become girly. For girls, pretty much anything goes.
Reply:I know several women that did this about fifteen years ago so that when their daughters applied for a job, the people wouldn't know if they were a woman or man before they called them in to interview. One friend of mine, in particular, was the head of Marketing for the city of Dallas - she knew what she had to go through to get to where she was and felt that by naming her daughter Hunter, she would at least get a little ahead with any sexist interviewer she might come across... Also, people just do it because they aren't "boy" names - they are considered "unisex" names, meaning either a boy OR girl can use them!!
Reply:The funny thing is I was just talking to my friend about this today as her little boy is called Jordan, and she was saying she feels weird when she drops him at pre-school and there is another girl there named Jordan!. But at the time she named him she really loved the name and they couldn't agree on anything else, so they went with it.
Reply:Well, my first name is Jamie, which used to be a boy name, but they feminized it a little bit by giving me the middle name Lynn. I think that Jordan for a little girl is darling, and Devon isn't that feminine. Growing up to be a tomgirl isn't bad either, and it doesn't even guarantee that.
Reply:um a lot of girl names started out as boy names like casey and stuff. and hey a lot of names are unisex which means they go for either sex. and honestly i want to name a girl shane, though hannah would probably be the number one choice since i do have henry. but i like the name shane for a girl. and i go to school with a girl named kyle.
Reply:I do not think its just woman that do this. You know sometimes a man is involved in naming there child. And just cause a girl gets a boyish like name does not mean she will grow up tom boy. What about guys who are named Kelly? Does that mean the guy will grow up girlie? Certainly not!
Reply:I have no idea!!! my dad always loved boy's names for girls, but when I first moved to Australia, i was put into the boys' football team! since then i've changed my name, i just couldn't stand it... it used to be Jaimee. my mom spelt it so people would notice i was a girl, but they mispelt it anyway...

My sister is Sam, as well...
Reply:Ask someone who has named their daughter with a male name..if they like it they will use it, and nobody should put them down about it or ask a stuipid question on why, names won't determine if the girl is going to be a tomboy or not..
Reply:Naming a baby is a personal thing, and who cares what other people think. There is no law saying a little girl can't be named Dylan or Jordan or any other boys name for that matter.
Reply:I don't think that a name will change the personality of the child.

Many people don't know that the name Ashley started of as a boy name.
Reply:welll certain names are unisex names and stand out like angel can be for a guy or girl jordan also... dosent mean they will be a tomboy ive seen lots of tomboys with the girly names like britney or alisha and turn out to be total butches
Reply:its not bad to be a tomgirl first of all.

and second they probably dont say "oh i want a guy name. lets see, ryan, dylan, jordan?"

they probably just like the way the name sounds.
Reply:they like unique names. im the opposite. im more traditional when it comes to names. its just different preferances
Reply:Um, all the names you mentioned are UNISEX NAMES!!!!

They can be used for either gender. *Rolls Eyes*
Reply:because their cute!!!why?is your wife like that?does she want your daughter named like a boy?
Reply:they sound good?
